There's no "right" or "wrong" way to create a scrapbook

How many other hobbies or creative pursuits have you tried where the finished product came out all wrong because you didn't follow precise directions?  Try baking cookies and leaving out an ingredient or keeping them in the oven for a few minutes too long and see how great they turn out - yuck! Or knitting a scarf without counting your stitches, or anything else along those lines.  Many creative endeavors just don't leave you that much personal freedom to express yourself the way you really want.  But with scrapbooks you can do whatever you want, however you want, and the end result is going to be up to you and you alone. Want to try bold and vivid colors? Go for it.  Want something more subtle and romantic?  That's up to you.  You have complete freedom to create what you want the way that you want.
